Troubleshooting

What's wrong with my board?

Pick the symptom. Each one lists the checks in the order a service centre would work through them, with a link to the full guide at every step. Start at the top and stop when it fixes itself.

Nothing happens when I try to start

The starter doesn't turn, or the board doesn't wake up at all.

  1. Is the magnet key seated in the handle? The board only wakes with the key in — pumps run and the green light flashes. Starting your board
  2. Is the board charged? A flat electronics battery is the usual answer. Charging a petrol board
  3. Work the 6-point check in order — fuel, sensor, plug, starter, charge, freewheel.
  4. Put the magnet on the light/start point and listen: does the starter turn at all? Starter removal & installation
  5. Check the freewheel: clockwise should engage (you hear the piston), counter-clockwise should spin free. Freewheel guide
  6. Still dead? Check the connectors at the iCU for corrosion or water. iCU removal & installation

It cranks but won't fire

The starter spins the engine over, but it never catches.

  1. Is there fuel in the tank, and is the fuel line connected and seated? Fuel tank removal & installation
  2. Is the fuel 50:1 mix, and fresh? Old mix from last season is a common no-start. How to mix fuel
  3. Pull the spark plug: wet, black or worn? Fit the spare from the toolkit. Spark plug check & replacement
  4. Confirm you have spark with a plug tester before going further. 6-point check
  5. Water in the cylinder from an earlier fall? Treat it as flooded and drain it. Draining a flooded engine
  6. Stop after 3–4 attempts in a row — more and you will overheat the starter.

It flooded and won't restart

It went over, filled with water, and now it will not run.

  1. Do not keep cranking it. Swim the board back to shore.
  2. Stand it on its tail and drain the back, then get it on the stand and take the lid off.
  3. Pull the plug lead and the plug, and let the plug cool before you touch it.
  4. Sit the board so the plug hole faces down, then crank with no plug fitted until the spray runs clear.
  5. Dry it 5–10 minutes, fit the plug (or the spare), and restart. Flooded board while riding · Draining a flooded engine
  6. If it still will not run, stop and get it to a service centre before you do damage.

No water coming out while riding

The telltale has stopped, or the board feels hotter than usual.

  1. Head straight back to shore. Running without cooling damages the engine and exhaust.
  2. Check the cooling intake and lines for weed, sand or plastic — that is the usual cause. Is your board cooling properly?
  3. Some boards have no visible telltale — the water exits at the back. Know which type yours is before you panic. Cooling check guide
  4. Ridden in salt without flushing? Salt crystals block the channels. Blocked cooling system
  5. Flush the system properly with the attachment before the next session. The flush attachment

Lost power, or it vibrates

It runs, but it will not pull like it should.

  1. Stop and check the jet pump for weed, rope or sand. Debris in the impeller causes both symptoms.
  2. Look at the impeller for chewed or bent blades. Jet pump & impeller repair
  3. Check the spark plug — a fouling plug loses top end first. Spark plug guide
  4. Riding much higher or hotter than usual? The ICU map may need changing. Mapping your ICU
  5. Exhaust problems make power vanish too — valve, ball or a burnt silencer. Exhaust systems explained

It won't charge

The charger light never goes green, or the board dies after a short ride.

  1. Find the charge lead — it always has a red cable tie. Charging a petrol board
  2. Red light means charging, green means done. A long red is normal on a flat battery — the iCU balances it.
  3. Check the charger plug and the board socket for corrosion; clean and grease the pins.
  4. Older board with the orange touchscreen charger? Use LiPo mode only. Battery charger (older JetSurfs)
  5. Carbureted board with a new DFI charger? You need the 4-pin to 2-pin reduction. DFI charger on older boards

The throttle is sticky or dead

The throttle does not spring back, feels notchy, or does nothing.

  1. Squeeze it with the engine off: notchy or stiff means the cable, not the engine.
  2. Free the cable with a cable luber and penetrant rather than replacing it. Freeing a sticky throttle cable
  3. Check the cable routing at the base of the handle — sand and salt gather there.
  4. If the cable is frayed or the handle is full of water, replace the unit. Hand control replacement

Water in the engine bay

There is water sitting in the bay after a session.

  1. Some water is normal — that is what the bilge pump is for. Wake the board with the magnet and let it clear.
  2. No water at the bilge outlet means the pump is not running. Bilge pump removal & installation
  3. Check the lid seal and every cover is closed properly — including the engine cover toggles.
  4. Dry the bay out and lubricate it before storing. Cleaning your board after a ride

Electric: no response from the board

Lights, tones or throttle are not doing what they should.

  1. Is the battery charged, and does the board give the tone and light that confirm it is registered? Getting an electric board ready
  2. Is the battery seated dead flat with all four clips closed? A crooked battery will not connect.
  3. Did you touch the throttle before the key went in? That gives a fast blinking red light — key out, key in, try again.
  4. Check the bay connectors for bent pins, water or sand, and dry them before refitting.
  5. Solid red battery light means safe-return mode — power is cut back and you have about 400 m to shore. Electric board orientation

Electric: the battery won't charge

The charger will not start, or the battery is not filling.

  1. The battery charges inside its bag — open the flap, pull the foam, uncover the connectors.
  2. The charger should read "charger ready, connect battery" before you plug in. Push the lead until it clicks.
  3. Check the mode: standard charges to 100%. Storage stops at 50% and travel at 30%. Charging an electric board
  4. Battery fell very low? That is what recovery mode is for — check the manual first.
  5. Still nothing? Stop and contact JETSURF USA rather than experimenting with a lithium pack.
When to stop and call a service centre: water in the engine that will not clear, a board that has been cranked repeatedly while flooded, anything with the fuel system that smells wrong, or any electric battery fault.
