1:12 · Freewheel test — turn it clockwise: it should engage and you hear the piston moving up and down. Turn it counter-clockwise: it should spin free — no engagement, no sound. See Freewheel removal & installation.
Tip: the freewheel test tells you two things at once — that the freewheel clutch is working (free one way, locked the other) and that the engine has compression (you feel and hear the piston on the clockwise turn).
Caution: if the freewheel is engaged in both directions, or spins free in both, stop — don't try to start the engine. That's a drivetrain fault to diagnose on the bench, not on the water.
