Everything the JetSurf exhaust does and everything that goes wrong with it — the ball valve that keeps water out, the two incompatible end types, the bolt-on silencer, and how a burned valve or discoloured pipe reads back to a cooling blockage.
Signs of an overheated exhaust — 0:43
0:49 — A hole burned through the end valve.
0:58 — The pipe discoloured to brown — a healthy pipe is black (side-by-side with a new one).
1:32 — The ball and spring in the back melted — compare to a new ball and spring.
How the exhaust ball valve works — 1:53
2:00 — A seal sits in the back. The spring holds the ball against it.
2:10 — Exhaust gas moving out pushes the ball off the seal (compressing the spring) and escapes.
2:18 — Stationary, the ball is pushed hard onto the seal — that's what stops water going up the exhaust.
2:27 — A worn or dirty ball lets water creep up the exhaust — the engine fills with water fast. A board that regularly takes water up the exhaust has a damaged ball.
2:43 — JetSurf recommend cleaning the valve every 2–3 rides on good oil; Rod says every ~3 months. Pull it apart, clean the ball, seal and inside, reassemble.
Clean the exhaust valve — 3:00
3:11 — Undo the Allen screw in the end (3.5 mm). The valve comes out — check the two O-rings are intact, don't drop the screw.
3:35 — Note where the eccentric cam sits (wider one side) — it rotates to align the exhaust with the ride plate (handmade boards vary).
3:52 — Unscrew the end cap. It comes apart: spring in its collar, eccentric ring, threaded ring, and the ball inside.
4:19 — Clean with Lanox — spray the ball in the hole, wipe it, clean carbon and junk from around the seal. Check the seal up inside.
5:00 — Reassemble: don't let the ball drop into the spring and stick — if it does it can't seal. Fit the spring so the ball can't sink into it.
5:21 — Fit the eccentric ring with the cavity facing outward, then the retaining ring — snug it up but not fully tight.
5:53 — Set the eccentric with its wide section down near the bottom (how it sat before).
6:00 — Fit the elbow, put the Allen key in so it locates into the ride plate and the eccentric, and rotate the eccentric to a position where it fits.
6:26 — Tighten the retaining ring first, then tighten the Allen key — that pulls it into place.
The two end types — 6:46
7:00 — You can often replace just the burned end and keep the pipe.
7:07 — Two types: new JetSurf ends have two O-rings; older ends have a single O-ring. The threads are different sizes — they don't interchange.
7:37 — If you ever want the silencer upgrade, you must be on the two-O-ring valve — the single-O-ring thread won't take it.
The silencer upgrade — 7:56
8:00 — Fit the two-O-ring end to the valve (ball and spring stay in).
8:23 — The silencer assembly (from Rod or JetSurf) is four parts: the new end that screws into the valve → the eccentric (adjusts the silencer to the ride plate) → a retaining ring → the silencer itself, which screws on. Check all O-rings — they deteriorate.
9:06 — Either upgrade the board's ride plate for the silencer to slide into (all new boards have this), or just put it in place and face the exhaust into the jet-pump cavity — that alone quietens the board noticeably. It's the simplest way to make a board quieter.
Diagnosing an overheated pipe — 9:36
9:52 — When the valve melts, exhaust gas leaks into the engine-compartment cavity, chokes the engine, and it runs badly or stalls — a useful early warning of an overheat.
10:21 — The telltale often looks like it's running fine but is actually partially blocked. Run a 2 mm drill down the little tube — you'll feel resistance and muck comes back up.
11:02 — The cooling water splits from the cylinder into the exhaust; a partial blockage there overheats the exhaust even while the telltale still flows.
11:25 — A trail of corrosion down the side of the pipe = it's leaking. The two big square O-rings at each end melt when the pipe overheats, and exhaust or cooling water seeps out. A heat-distorted pipe gets replaced whole.
Pipe types & the internal baffle — 12:08
12:14 — Two pipe styles: an O-ring flange + two spring retainers onto the cylinder, or an older style with a rubber "gum" that the exhaust port slides into (the gums melt and deteriorate).
12:56 — A pipe that rattles has a broken internal baffle tube. It corrodes off and breaks up, which (1) blocks the pipe with aluminium debris and (2) changes the tune — that tube length shapes the engine's power in a rev range, so a broken baffle means lost performance.
13:41 — All new pipes have a stainless-steel centre — they don't corrode and don't break up. A real improvement.
Fitting notes — 14:01
14:16 — Leave the big end off to get the pipe through the board — you can't slide it through assembled. Fit the silencer setup once the pipe is in.
Tip: a melted exhaust valve or a brown pipe is never the root cause — it's the symptom of a cooling blockage upstream. Clear the telltale and the cylinder-to-exhaust branch with a 2 mm drill before you fit a new pipe, or you'll cook the new one too. See Blocked cooling system — diagnosis & repair.
Caution: the two end types don't interchange — check which valve you have before ordering. Never reassemble the ball valve with the ball able to sink into the spring; it won't seal and water goes straight up the exhaust. Replace a heat-distorted or rattling pipe rather than patching it.
