The engine is water-cooled — water circulates around it while you ride. How you confirm it's working depends on whether your board has a catalytic converter.

The telltale — boards without a catalytic converter

• 0:32 — These boards have a telltale: cooling water is sprayed out of a small outlet so you can see, at a glance, that the engine is being cooled.
• 0:39 — If you're riding and no water is coming from the telltale, head back to shore as quickly as you can so the engine doesn't overheat.
• 0:52 — Back on shore, check the cooling lines for wood, weed, or any debris blocking the system.

Boards with a catalytic converter

• 0:57 — Fitted on the Adventure DFI, Adventure DFI Plus, and Cruiser — whether your board has one depends on your region and market.
• 1:12 — These boards have no visible telltale outlet. The cooling system still works — the water just exits at the back of the board, where the turbine exits, instead of spraying out the side.

Telling a race board from a catalytic-converter board

• 1:29 · Race board — slightly larger exhaust, black heat surround for sound deadening, two springs, and a small black fitting at the exhaust outlet.
• 1:42 · Catalytic-converter board — exhaust is slightly smaller in diameter, still black, but with a stainless ring that marks it as having a catalytic converter. The cooling line on the cylinder head may also sit in a different position than on the race.
