This is the job for inspecting or replacing the reed valve — the one-way flap valve behind the throttle body. Worn reed petals cost power and make the engine hard to start. The check itself takes seconds; the care is in the two gaskets on reassembly.

Tools & supplies

• 3 mm Allen key
• Two new gaskets (engine-to-reed and reed-to-throttle-body)
• Thread-locker (Loctite)
• Bright light source for the reed inspection
• Replacement reed valve — only if the petals fail the light check

Removal

1. 0:14 — Using a 3 mm Allen key, unscrew the throttle body.
2. 0:14 — Remove the reed valve housing together with the throttle body.

Inspect the reed petals

3. 0:22 — Hold the assembly up to a light source and look through the reed petals. If any light passes through, the petals are not sealing — replace the reed valve.

Installation

4. 0:29 — Fit the first gasket onto the engine, then mount the reed valve.
5. 0:33 — Place the second gasket between the reed valve and the throttle body.
6. 0:36 — Position the throttle body and drive the bolts with Loctite.
